John Paul Jones was one of the most famous and widely recognized Naval commanders in US history. He was the naval hero in the American Revolutionary war. John Paul was born in Scotland in 1747. He was not born in a noble family and his father used to be a gardener.
At the age of 13, John Paul joined the British merchant marine as a cabin boy and begin his seagoing career. As years passed he became the master of a Jamaica-owned slaver brigantine ship in 1766 but soon left the position in disgust for slave trading. In 1773, he was accused of killing one of his men and was arrested. Afraid that he won’t get a fair trial, he fled to American and took the name John Paul Jones to hide his real Identity.
As the American revolution broke out, in 1775 he joined the newly formed continental navy to fight against the British. He was given the command of the sloop providence where he captured sixteen prize British ships along with destroying many ships in Nova Scotia. In 1779, Jone Paul Jones marked the legendary battle in the American Naval history taking down Royal Navy frigate Serapis of the British empire.
After the American Revolution, he served as the rear admiral to the Russian Navy for two years. In 1792, he returned to Paris where he died due to his increased health problems. In 1905, a century later his remains were bought back to America and is now buried in a crypt at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland.
